MARCH - APRIL 2005 INTERVIEWS

Interview with Dear Screaming

By: Cindy Massey

BSW: After reviewing your website I noticed you described your influences. Are there any more influences that you may have left out?

DS: Well there's lots of different stuff we listen to. Neil Young, Matthew Good, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles are a few of them. I’m sure they have all influenced us in one way or another. I’m sure there's a little bit of everything somewhere in our songs.

BSW: Who is DEAR SCREAMING?

DS: Dear Screaming is Karl Redding, Duane Hiebert, Jared Hildebrand, Ryan Frost and myself, Derek Helps

BSW: Being from a small town, how does it feel when you play a venue in a larger city?

DS: To be honest it doesn't really feel much different. In our hometown we been fortunate to have really good support from our first show on and that is something we are really thankful for. It is more exciting for us playing in the city though because we don't know what kind of crowd is going to come out to the show.

BSW: What can we expect to see at one of your performances?

DS: Short answer, 5 guys playing the shit out of their instruments.

BSW: Do you have a visual experience for the audience also? (lights/fog etc)

DS: As of yet the only lights and fog that goes on is whatever the club were playing at has. I like to think we put on a pretty good visual experience. We all have our own quirks and things we do onstage. someone's always doing something worth watching. Whether it’s Duane jumping around, Karl doing his Karl thing or me rippin it up some crazy face melting solo. haha, no I don't do that. But seriously.

BSW: Do any of you get the jitters before a show?

DS: Well I don't know about the other guys, I wouldn't think so. I know I very rarely do. I think we've all been playing long enough in front of people that were comfortable with what we do.

BSW: Your ep is coming out in February, has there been any news regarding when?

DS: Well unfortunately were probably looking at a March release date. Were just starting to get the art work together and from there I think it takes a few weeks for production so hopefully soon.

BSW: When can we expect a full CD from you guys?

DS: Well there's been talk of going back into the studio in the not to distant future. What will become of that I don't know. We have enough songs to do a full length, so it’s a possibility. I guess we should first worry about getting this ep out before we move on.

BSW: Who writes most of your lyrics?

DS: Either Karl or Ryan, depends on who's singing the song

BSW: Is the way you write songs usually started by a guitar riff, if not describe your process?

DS: The process is usually different for every song. Some of the songs like "It could be all", the chords and structure was there and we just re arranged it and added our parts to it. Other songs like "the time that fell" and "brackets" came from just jamming and finding parts that we liked and putting them together.

BSW: I’ll leave this spot for you to tell our readers anything you would like to leave them with.

DS: We’re going to be on the River City Rawk show at the end of March. The 31st I believe. Once the cd comes out were planning on doing a lot of city shows. So we should have a lot of stuff coming up.

BSW: Thank you for the interview, I look forward to coming to one of your shows and taking pictures for an upcoming issue.

DS: No problem Cindy. It was my pleasure. We look forward to seeing you there.

Interview with Quinzy

By: Cindy Massey

BSW: I reviewed your website and I noticed that you don't really talk a lot about yourselves in your bio. You described yourselves in few words. Yet those words were telling your tale. I was curious as to your lyrical style. Could you describe it for me?

Quinzy: It really varies from song to song, some melodies call for a certain lyrical idea, and some lyrics call for a certain melody. It always depends on the song, because the song comes first!

BSW: Who is Quinzy?

Quinzy: A band of three.

BSW: Being a three piece band have you ever tried for a fourth member?

Quinzy: We have, and the first half of the result is gloriously chronicled on our website (the second half is in the works).

BSW: What can we expect to see at one of your performances?

Quinzy: A lot of screaming girls and an occasional lecture on space.

BSW: At your website I also noticed a real humble attitude going on, are you really as humble as that site makes you out to be? (This is a rare quality, I notice these things.)

Quinzy: Sometimes I think we're compensating for our enormous egos by acting humble, but usually we're just humble.

BSW: Your show on Feb. 25/05 is coming up fast, do you get excited before shows anymore?

Quinzy: We definitely still get excited about shows. It may be hard to believe, but after slugging it out in the trenches for all these years we still love doing it. I think this, the first 'Popstravaganza' at the Collective, will be a real treat.

BSW: When can we expect a full CD from you guys?

Quinzy: We're starting pre-production for our first full-length album right now. It should be out by late July or early August

BSW: Do any of you get the jitters before a show?

Quinzy: It really depends on the show. Usually we're pretty confident, but when a big one comes up we might get a little jittery. Some controlled nervousness always makes for a better show, anyway.

BSW: Who writes most of your lyrics?

Quinzy: Brian and Sandy

BSW: Is the way you write songs usually started by a guitar riff, if not describe your process?

Quinzy: Again, the songwriting process changes from song to song. Brian or Sandy will generally come up with the 'bare bones' and then we'll all work on the arrangement together. For some songs Sandy just starts with a title he likes and goes from there. Other than that, we rely heavily on wizardry.

BSW: I'll leave this spot for you to tell our readers anything youwould like to leave them with.

Quinzy: Wear a scarf and have a lovely day.

Interview with Wazooka

By: Cindy Massey

BSW: Guys how you all doing today, (for real)?

W: We're all doing great ...Thanks

BSW: Who is WAZOOKAA?

W: WazookaA is...

Damian Nichols - Guitar, Vocals

Paul Lindel - Bass, Vocals

Mike Wagner - Drums

BSW: How did you come up with this unique name?

W: That's a good question… I think it came up during a session of many alcoholic beverages. Someone just spit it out and it stuck.

BSW: What can our readers expect to see at one of your performances?

W: Well, it's not what they see that we find is important. It's what they hear. Although, you may see Damian fall on his ass now and again.

BSW: I’ve seen your shows and if I remember correctly, I had a blast. What/Who are your major influences?

W: This is a tough one. Between the three of us our musical influences are very diverse. We like everything from rock, metal, and punk to classic rock and country and blues. I think that shows a lot in our writing. People usually tell us that they have a hard time pin-pointing who we sound like because, just when they think they have it. We play another song that sounds nothing like the last. The three of us have short attention spans so, every new song must challenge us somewhat. Did I even answer your question on that? one?...lol

BSW: When is your next show?

W: No dates are confirmed right now. Look for us in mid to late April to be playing at the ZOO

BSW: When can we expect a full CD from you guys?

W: Probably never, haha... we have this thing about full length CD's.... we would rather put out an EP every year to tell you the truth. The music stays fresher that way, cost remains low to the consumer and our catalog grows faster. That's probably the way we'll keep doing it unless something happens with a distribution or record deal of sorts.

BSW: Who writes most of your lyrics?

W: That would be Damian

BSW: You’ve all been in other projects around town, do you want to Describe some of them?

W: Damian used to front a band called “Ram 'em Jesus” which have since become “Knuckleduster” with his departure. Paul used to play in “Gingersnap” and has since started to front his own project called “The Hersemen” as well as playing with us. Me, (Mike) Play guitar with “Pretty Train Crash” as well as playing drums in WazookaA.

BSW: Is the way you write songs usually started by a guitar riff, if not describe your process?

W: I would say the guitar riff is the main contributor of the start of a Song, but sometimes it will start with a bass riff or lyric melody. There really is no process or formula we just let it write itself. If it feels right we keep it.

BSW: I’ll leave this spot for you to tell our readers anything you would like to leave them with.

W:...Play Safe kids!

BSW: Thank you for the interview, I look forward to coming to one of Your shows and taking pictures for an upcoming issue.
